Title: NRL TEAMS = WHY I LIKE/DISLIKE TEAMS
Description: Brisbane Broncos
oiler - September 3, 2003 09:34 AM (GMT)
I thought Id introduce this topic as a fun way of generating NRL discussion. I'll kick it off and would love to see your replies. A different team will be discussed each week.
BRISBANE BRONCOS
Why I like
* The Broncos are the best provider of QLD State Of Origin reps. In order to smack NSW around, they have been the cornerstone of all QLD rep teams.
* Darren Lockyer, Trevor Gillmeister, Allan Langer, Shane Webeke, Richard Swain : What credits to the game. Legends.
* Special mention goes to the absolute stars in Wally Lewis and Michael Hancock. The best 5/8 in history and the winger of the 1990's.
* Wayne Bennett : He may be a grumblebum, but he definitely places his players interests first.
* Kicking Cronulla's ass in the forgotten 1997 grand final. Special menton goes to denying the merged scum and the cheats.
* Buying Mundine.
* Losing to the Tigers this year at Lang Park.
* They missed out on Benji Marshall.
Why I dislike
* They have raped and pillaged QLD league for far too long. They do stuff-all for rugby league development, considering their wealth. They take the best and give nothing back. They rarely visit schools and promotions, while Sydney league clubs (Parra's "Eels on wheels" program and the Tigers involvement in Runaway Bay), AFL and Union bust their guts in Qld to promote their product. They are far too lax and can do better.
* Ribot whinging. I even think they are glad he is gone. He promoted the "us against them" attitude in the early 90's.
* They have kicked the tigers ass for an eternity.
* Winning games in the last few minutes. It REALLY pisses me off to see the broncos play like shit for the first 70min and take the game out in the last 10. It has happened FAR too many times and is very annoying. No other team in history has done this as often.
* The Walker brothers : Enough said.

Thats because the cowboys, crushers and chargers have never really had a look in when it comes to good young queensland talent for each season, the cowboy are catching them thou.

Swain a legend  , damn good player but the term legend gets used way too much. Same goes for Gilly

How many NRL/ARL premierships did Wally (s a wanker :D ) Lewis win? And Hancock should have been Cockhead i could never stand that guy one bit.....Carne was alot better then him anyways
* Wayne Bennett : He may be a grumblebum, but he definitely places his players interests first.
READ HIS BOOK EVERYONE.......seriously
* Kicking Cronulla's ass in the forgotten 1997 grand final. Special menton goes to denying the merged scum and the cheats.
Meh, didn't really care who won that grand final
* Buying Mundine.
WOW didn't that pay off
* Losing to the Tigers this year at Lang Park.
That should be losing to EVERYONE this year at Lang Park
* They missed out on Benji Marshall.
Good, hes alot better at Wests imo :)

This is just about the same as your first "like"
* Ribot whinging. I even think they are glad he is gone. He promoted the "us against them" attitude in the early 90's.
Hes a smart man, but a dickhead.
* They have kicked the tigers ass for an eternity.
Name one team that hasn't :P (Souths don't count)
* Winning games in the last few minutes. It REALLY pisses me off to see the broncos play like shit for the first 70min and take the game out in the last 10. It has happened FAR too many times and is very annoying. No other team in history has done this as often.
The broncos winning pisses me off if its by 2 or 200
* The Walker brothers : Enough said.[/color]
LOL two have no heart and the other thinks hes a porn star

FACT: Two of Souths wins this year came against Wests.
So, it would seem, even Souths kick their asses.
Chris
P.S. Good point about Brisbane doing sweet FA to promote the game in QLD. They petitioned to get South QLD and Gold Coast out, then had a monopoly on Queensland talent. This is the reason guys like Scott Prince are wasted in Queensland.
P.P.S. The 1997 Grand Final didn't count. That's why records have to say 'Superleague' in brackets after it, like it was some kind of Under 19's comp.

Richard Swain played for Raymond Terrace Magpies :)

How many NRL/ARL premierships did Wally (s a wanker ) Lewis win? |
ok seriously thats such a stupid point right there. ok ill put it this way to you since your a parra fan..... How many NRL/ARL Premierships did Peter Sterling win? none. he won 3 or 4 NSWRL ones back in the same days when Wally Lewis won 4 or 5 Brisbane Comp Premierships with Wynnum-Manly. But yeah i think Wally played one season when the national comp was an actual national comp not 15 teams from nsw and the broncos. so since we cant judge him on a national league basis then theres only one way to see how he went against the best players league has to offer, so my theoretical question is, How many times did Wally Lewis dominate an origin game? youd probably be looking at almost double figures there. Wally is the greatest player EVER.
Gilly is a legend, i mean HE GOT DRUNK AT THE EKKA! hehe
Of course the Super League Grand Final was a real grand final geez. Broncos were the best team by far that year they woulda whooped ARL's mickey mouse champions Newcastle and they proved they were the best totally dominating the NRL in 1998.
Its all good though guys im just arguing my point for my team. I understand all your jealousy towards the mighty broncos hehe. Id be jealous too of a team thats won 5 premierships in my lifetime and there worst finish was 8th yet they still make the finals! go the broncos we rule so much lol
chriswalkerbush - September 3, 2003 11:38 PM (GMT)
Does that mean you're jealous of the 'Dogs?
Brisbane weren't 'the best team' in 1997. Manly won the '96' GF, so I think you could say they were the best team. Hell, the team they beat (Saints) was there to.
The NSWRL is the ARL. It's stupid to argue otherwise. Go to
http://www.ozleague.com/statshq_premiership.asp?stat=listHow many 'NSWRL' premierships do you see there? Now, how many Brisbane ones do you see?
The fact of the matter is, the NSWRL was always far more dominant than the Brisbane league.

Ah, Dogs three and Parra four. My bad. ;)

but u cant ask the question how many nswrl premierships did wally win coz he hardly even played in it. I reckon Wynnum woulda whooped parramatta, wynnum owned back then just coz of wally, geno & dowling.
You cant call the NSWRL a national competition when Wally Lewis, Gene Miles, Mal Meninga, Gary Belcher, Greg Dowling, Mark Murray, Peter Jackson and more were playing in the brisbane comp.
I guess u didnt see super league in 97 we owned everyone and 96? we were the best team throughout the year but kept getting screwed by suspensions. The 98 Broncos is probably the greatest team ever noone could touch them.
i dont get the thing behind the "are u jealous of the dogs?" hmm lol.
brandell - September 4, 2003 04:09 AM (GMT)
The NSWRL was a national competition, Just because those players didn't play doesn't negate it's legitimacy. It's like saying that the NRL wouldn't be national if players like Johns, Tahu, Buderus, and Swain still played in the Newcastle league.

Tell me something i don't know mutherfucker :P
I agree with what u said about wally, i just wanted to get on the nerve of a few queenslanders <_<.
Wally was like 31 or 32 when the two comps 'joined' and spent most of his ARL days at Gold Coast (Not the best place to win premierships from...).
Although calling him the best ever is a bit step, no matter how good he was, is or will be there will always have been, will be or is someone better.
brandell - September 4, 2003 04:38 AM (GMT)
Queenslanders are the bottom of the barrel, when you come to think of it most of them didn't even deserve ther position in the australian side this year. Webke hasn't really been as dominant as alot of other forwards in the game and players like hegarty and Carlaw are in no way better than the likes of most of the New South Welshman.
To say that Wally Lewis was the best five eigth in history would to overlook other greats like Kenny, Fittler, Daley etc. They were all good and if anyone deserves the title of best five eigth its Freddy. Maybe Lewis could be remarked as the fattest five eigth but thats it.
oiler - September 4, 2003 06:15 AM (GMT)
As you can tell, Im not a bronco fan. But the way in which some people knocked Wally is factless and stupid.
Wally was well deserving of Immortal status because of the way he could dominate and control a game. NSW people hate him because he was too good for them.
What made Wally stand out from the rest was his mind, vision and strength. To compare him with guys like Daley is a non-argument. The closest to Lewis is Fittler. No other 5/8th that I've ever seen is anywhere near as good as those two.
The Brisbane comp was damn strong in the early 80's. Probably a tougher comp than the nswrl, but not as skillful.
brandell - September 4, 2003 07:14 AM (GMT)
Roger why are you picking on me. :(
That not nice, Lewis didn't play for Balmain.

ok dude ill put it down to either you are 14 and never saw wally or ur just a retard. Fittler doesnt come close to wally. though i mean thats no disrespect to you if u never saw wally coz yeah u cant really say wally was the best if u never saw him i mean i go around saying alfie is the best halfback ever but thats coz i have never seen neone better then him.
chriswalkerbush - September 5, 2003 08:53 AM (GMT)
I take it you've never watched Andrew Johns play then?
Alfie may have been better on and off, but he's not consistent. Johns is a more complete footballer. Langer couldn't defend worth shit, and he sure as hell didn't have the same quality long kicking game.

johns hasnt got shit on alfie and u know it. if johns played at his peak in the mid 90s he wouldnt of even be that highly rated. both langer and stuart are far better players then him

Would have to disagree with you about Webke and Hegarty, who I think are cracking players, but how Carlaw manages to get picked for Australia is beyond me.
He was awful on the 2001 Kangaroos tour, and I don't see much improvement two years later.
Cheers,
Mark F

I like Hegarty as a player, but I still think Tahu and Sing should be the Australian wing pairing. If Queensland hadn't won the dead rubber, Hegarty wouldn't have had a look in.
