Title: Round Four Results

chriswalkerbush - February 10, 2004 02:54 PM (GMT)
Round four usually sees things settle down as clubs find their groove- but both Premier League and Division Two remained nigh on impossible to tip. Premier League leaders Wellington and Surfers Paradise continued on their winning ways.

PREMIER LEAGUE

McLinden Cuts Loose
Ousted Central halfback Mark McLinden today combined with Adelaide's potent backline to 'gift' Carnarvon with a 26-12 hammering. After Carnarvon won round one 28-10, the one sided return clash evened the ledger between the two sides.
Adelaide: Mark McLinden 3 and Wendell Sailor. Geyer 5/6
Carnarvon: Tim Every 2. Luana 2/2
PoM Points: Mark McLinden 3, Darren Albert 2, and Wendell Sailor 1.

Ravens Rule the Roost
Anyone who doubted that Capetown's 13-6 round two win over Central Coast was legitimate should have paid close attention to today's clash, as Capetown did it again to record an upset 20-16 win over the unpredictable Falcons. It was the usual suspects for the Ravens, with New Zealand five eighth Andrew Mehrtens scoring sixteen points.
Central Coast: Steven Wild and Hazem El Masri. El Masri 4/4
Capetown: Sebastian Mpofu and Andrew Mehrtens 2. Mehrtens 4/4
PoM Points: Andrew Mehrtens 3, Sebastian Mpofu 2, and Hazem El Masri 1.

Surfers Make it Two from Two
Surfers Paradise have completed the Central double with an authoratitive 20-6 beating of the Central Phoenix. The Punks' forwards asserted themselves, while the team as a whole made sure that the ASRL world sat up and paid attention to them.
Central: Scott Donald. Deacon 1/1
Surfers Paradise: Ruben Wiki 2 and Lincoln Kennedy. Hannay 4/5
PoM Points: Lincoln Kennedy 3, Josh Hannay 2, and Ruben Wiki 1.

Crusade on the Mend
After a shaky start to their 2004 premiership campaign, Gold Coast beat their first contender today with a solid 24-12 hit out against the up and down Parramatta Vikings. Missing Rupeni Caucaunibuca and Danny Nutley, the Crusade did it the hard way- and will be agonising after they lost hooker Danny Buderus for up to six weeks with a broken hand.
Gold Coast: Tyler Durden, Matthew Gidley, Steve Simpson, and Michael Ennis. Wilkinson 4/4
Parramatta: Jamie Lyon 2. Fitzgibbon 2/2
PoM Points: Tony Puletua 3, Tyler Durden 2, and Billy Slater 1.

Brisbane Fade Under Rogers' 18
Brisbane's promising start to their return to Premier League football has been all but forgotten, as the Manly Cannons downed them 26-16 on the back of an eighteen point haul from Australian winger, Mat Rogers. It was poor discipline that cost Brisbane- their thirteen penalties giving the Cannons an extra eight points through penalties.
Manly: Slick Cupples, Mat Rogers, and Steve Menzies. Rogers 7/7
Brisbane: Jason Croker, Petero Civoniceva, and Barry Muir. Harris 2/3
PoM Points: Mat Rogers 3, Edward Hoartshire 2, and Steve Menzies 1.

Perth Win- Still Look Awful
Last year's fourth placed Perth Taipans continue to struggle for form in the early stages of the 2004 season, a late try to Owen Finegan lifting the side to a 20-18 win over the winless Hawkesbury Mavericks. It was an entertaining clash throughout, but one Perth were expected to dominate.
Perth: Anton Roarke, Keiran Cunningham, Toa Kohe-Love, and Owen Finnegan. Lockyer 2/5
Hawkesbury: Inoke Ratudina, Brad Drew, and Taine Randell. Ross 3/4
PoM Points: Darren Lockyer 3, Glenn Morrison 2, and Toa Kohe-Love 1.

Oilers Assert Themselves
After being all but written off following their 13-4 loss to North Sydney, the Oilers have stepped up to the plate and handed North Melbourne a humiliating 30-6 beating. The Bob Fulton Cup champions couldn't find the form that saw them down all comers in the tournament, whilst Sydney showcased their depth across the park.
Sydney: Brent Tate, Daniel Fitzhenry, Grant Martin, John Skandalis, and Benji Marshal. Gower 5/5
North Melbourne: Paul Sculthorpe. Sculthorpe 1/1
PoM Points: John Skandalis 3, Grant Martin 2, and Jason Ryles 1.

New Premiership Favourites
On the back of a 32-6 whalloping of the North Sydney Newbloods- the Wellington Cougars have firmed as outright favourites for the premiership this season. Although some argue that the side have yet to face a genuine contender since being bundled out of the Bob Fulton Cup by Central Coast- the Cougars' outstanding for and against speaks for itself.
Wellington: Lesley Vainikolo, John Sitizien, Timana Tahu, and Sean Long 2. Sinfield 6/7
North Sydney: Ashley Harrison. Burke 1/1
PoM Points: Kevin Sinfield 3, Timana Tahu 2, and Sean Long 1.

Darwin Down the 'Gong
Wollongong remain winless in the 2004 season after today going down 24-12 to the visiting Darwin Cyclones. It was an entertaining but sloppy game, punctuated by handling errors. The Cyclones, having learnt their lesson against Sydney, finished their chances to record another win.
Wollongong: Danny Bampton and Chris Whittaker. Lawton 2/2
Darwin: Justin Hodges, Richard Swain, Michael Wainwright, and Jim Dymock. Apokalips 4/6
PoM Points: Jim Dymock 3, Red Apokalips 2, and Matt Orford 1.

DIVISION TWO

Wyrms Continue Their Winning Ways
Coffs Harbour's winning streak continued to grow today courtesy of a 32-20 win over a plucky Christchurch Carnage side. The win was engineered by Japanese international Andrew Miller- whose tactical kicking and pair of tries laid an excellent platform for the win.
Christchurch: Fourcade Abasse 2 and Chad Robinson. Connerry 4/4
Coffs Harbour: Andrew Miller 2, Bill Rhyven, David Niu, Tom Bowman, and Kevin Campion. Singh 4/6
PoM Points: Andrew Miller 3, Matt Giteau 2, and Bill Rhyven 1.

Amazing Rhinos
No one would have picked it, but Redlands remain one of the form teams in Division Two after pounding Colombo 36-14 in front of a disheartened and violent Sri Lankan crowd. The Rhinos' entire lineup fired- but it was prop Jamain Lowe who did the real damage- making metres at will against a lazy Harlequin line.
Colombo: Zane Clarke, Paul Johnson, and Shane Millard. Appo 1/4
Redlands: Paul Sterling, Matthew Lyons, Dennis Scott, Ben Beckett, Keiron Dawson, and Chris Beattie. Takawira 6/6
PoM Points: Jamain Lowe 3, Keiron Dawson 2, and Allianya Takawira 1.

Can't Catch a Break
Suva's hopes of recording their first win of the season ground to a halt today when Ronan O'Gara failed to convert Sissy Tulanne's late try to leave scores at 26 all against an equally dissapointed Hobart Shades side. Probably the better side, Hobart let down their guard to allow in two late tries- and will be grateful to the sledger who caused O'Gara to lose his composure on the crucial kick.
Hobart: Richie Barnett 2, David March, Tony Martin, and Brandon Costin. Martin 3/5
Suva: Lance Rhodes, Caleb Ralph, Sissy Tulanne, Johnathon Hannerford, and Mark Tookey. O'Gara 3/5
PoM Points: David March 3, Richie Barnett 2, and Billy Peden 1.

Power Stun Ferrets
Port Moresby remain atop the Division Two table for at least another wake after downing New England 36-24 in a thrill a minute clash at Armidale Oval. The Ferrets were in it up to their eyeballs, but some flare in the backline spelled the end for the side late in the game.
New England: Matt Cooper, David Peachy, Ben Walker, and Toori Tatu. Tatu 4/6
Port Moresby: Matthew Bowen 2, Christian Bai, John Morris, Mohammed Zian Ali 2, and Etienne Fynn. Carter 4/7
PoM Points: Ryan Cross 3, John Morris 2, and Matthew Bowen 1.

The Russian Giant
North Queensland's Lars Gjolnier inspired his countrymen playing across Australia and the Pacific today with an absolutely terrifying display of dominance against the Canberra Chargers today. The six foot nine Russian front rower intimidated and bashed whoever came near him on the way to leading the Dolphins to a 22-10 win.
North Queensland: Malcolm Alker, Joel Monaghan, Gabrielle Yane, and Linden Drummond. Martin 3/5
Canberra: Sean Towers 2. O'Neill 1/2
PoM Points: Lars Gjolnier 3, Claude Sirvent 2, and Justin Marshall 1.

Titans Find Their Form
Tamworth City bounced back to form today with a 38-20 hammering of the Penrith Highlanders before a dismayed Penrith crowd. Young gun Scott Ella continues to look like a contender for rookie of the year, whilst Byron Kelleher made sure NZ selectors remembered him when the ANZAC test came around with a solid man of the match performance.
Penrith: Brett Firman 2, Julian O'Neill, and Michael Vella. Riddell 2/4
Tamworth City: Brian O'Driscroll, Justin Ryder 2, Byron Kelleher, Craig Simmons, Steve Carew, and Scott Ella. Cummins 5/8
PoM Points: Byron Kelleher 3, Scott Ella 2, and Kurt Gidley 1.

Pumas Maul Perth City
Eastwood reminded everyone that they're a threat for an eight berth courtesy of a 34-12 annihilation of the struggling Perth City Blackhawks. The sides seem to have switched roles of late- with Eastwood winning two straight and the Blackhawks now on a two game losing streak.
Perth City: Brendon Reeves and Constant Müller. Müller 2/2
Eastwood: Francis Maloney, Sam Murphy, Phil Morwood, Cedric Debrosse 2, and Andy Hay. Furner 5/7
PoM Points: Aurelion Cologni 3, Phil Morwood 2, and Cedric Debrosse 1.

Devils Shock Stallions
South Melbourne have caused their biggest upset since leaving Premier League on a high with a win over Gold Coast- today stunning Fairfield with a solid 18-8 win. The win could have been more embarassing for the favourites had Brick Dury managed to land more of his goals.
South Melbourne: Gary Connolly, Asuki Miyamoto, Paul Southern, and Dean Bosnich. Drury 1/5
Fairfield: Steven Goodhew. Magro 2/2
PoM Points: Luke Lewis 3, Matt Bickerstaff 2, and Dean Bosnich 1.

Mils' Magnificent Marlins
It may look like fancy alliteration, but it was the Mils Muliaina show today as the talented fullback lead Auckland to an upset 12-8 win over the St George Breakers. While he did score a try, it was Muliaina's cover defence that won him man of the match honours.
St George: Amos Roberts. Bunce 2/2
Auckland: Mils Muliaina and Alfred Songoro. Fields 2/3
PoM Points: Mils Muliaina 3, Robbie Ross 2, and Mangus Reece 1.

QUOTE (MarkF @ Feb 11 2004, 08:08 AM)
Newcastle Fear's best result of the season... :D

While I am wallowing in the satisfaction of, at this stage, not having been beaten for the first time this season, its with heavy-heart that I have to ask - where is Newcastle Fear's result?

I suspect my satisfaction is just about to end!

Cheers,

Mark F

Fear on the Board
In a special Tuesday night clash, the Newcastle Fear have finally clicked into gear and recorded a solid 30-12 win over the Pacific Sharks. The win, Newcastle's first, was engineered by a masterful display from young halfback Nathan Fien.
Newcastle: Nathan Fien, Joe Vagana, Leon Pryce, and Sean Rudder 2. Fien 5/5
Pacific: Barin El Tan, Michael Weyman, and Owen Craigie. Lamaisson 0/3
PoM Points: Nathan Fien 3, Thomas Leullai 2, and Joe Vagana 1.
