Title: England subs to start

MarkF - November 17, 2003 12:21 AM (GMT)
Mark Fowler looks set to make a number of changes to his English Lions side to take on the unfancied USA in round 2 of the World Cup.

Coming off the back of a 38-6 pounding of the Lebanese Cedars, and New Zealand’s shock defeat to Fiji, England are firm favourites to take out the group and avoid the tough Irish side in the quarter-finals.

Tries by Kris Radlinski, Keith Senior, Gary Connolly, Kevin Sinfield, Paul Sculthorpe (2) and Paul Anderson, with Jonny Wilkinson booting five from seven, helped England to victory, but Fowler is expected to star his four substitutes from the Lebanon game - Danny Orr, Jimmy Watts, Kevin Sinfield and Anderson – against the USA, with Wilkinson, James Lowes, Sculthorpe and Adrian Morley dropping down to the bench.

Fowler could also give runs to Paul Deacon and Martin Gleeson, although will resist the temptation to make wholesale changes with his team in such a commanding position after the first game.

New Zealand take on Lebanon at Aussie Stadium in the other game in the group, needing to bounce back from that 28-10 defeat at the hands of Fiji, who will now fancy their chances of finishing in the top two.
