not the first thing everyone looks at when they see metallica live, but did anyone notice that lars uses another kind of mics for his kick ? it seems like the mics are now totally inside the bassdrum.. does anyone have an idea what kind of mic he uses for the moment ?

I would have guessed shures but I was partly right... cheap mics that work great live
but didnt expect him to use shures in the studio...:
Shure microphones (studio):
Shure BETA 56 - Snare and tom
Shure BETA 52 - Bass drum
Shure SM94 - Hi-hat and other cymbals

Microphone setup (live):
Shure SM57 (x2) - Snare drum
Audio Technica - ATM87R (x2) - Bass drums
Audio Technica - ATM23HE (x2) - Rack toms
Audio Technica - ATM25 (x2) - Floor toms
Audio Technica - AT4041 (x5) - Overhead mics + Neumann - overhead microphones (?)

lol, even tho I know shures are good mics, they are cheap mics... I expected him to use expensive mics for recording studio... in my audio/lightning in theater class we were discussing mics and quality of mics and speakers... he said crap in crap out, and the shure was mentioned, so I raised my hand and told him I was taught that shures are great mics, he said no they are great for the price but if you are recording in a studio they arent recommended because if you record with crap you are gonna end up with crap... I said my teacher for radio broadcasting said they are used by almost every musician so they must be good, he said yea because when a musician goes on tour, if you get one stolen or broken, they are cheap so it doesnt put a dent in your funds plus they are good mics for a cheap price...
I wouldve expecting lars to use expensive drum mics rather than 99 dollar shure sm57's

yea, but you know, it's not everything in the microphones..the recording technique and setup and positioning of the mic's is important to, and the room and similiar things. They probably like the shure sound, and im Im preety sure they tried more expensive microphones, but maybe they didnt like the sound of them, so that's why they probably stick to shures.
